This is a fun birthday gift I made for a little friend of ours! I’m all about the kids toys/activities that don’t involve batteries or electrical cords!
I’ve also included a “no sew” version you could make if you aren’t the sewing type!
Here’s what I used:
3’x3′ square of white flannel
5 5″x7″ pieces of light purple flannel
5 5″x7″ pieces of dark purple flannel
4 3′ pieces of black ribbon
black fabric paint
To get started I drew a grid on the 3’x3′ white flannel, dividing it into 9 1’x1′ squares.
I pinned the ribbons on top of the lines…
…and used a zig-zag stitch to sew them on.
I sewed a hem around the edge of the “playing board.”
I ironed on the applique to the center square (more details about appliques) and then used the black paint to outline it and create the body and antennae.
To create the toss bags, I folded the 5″x7″ purple rectangles in half with the backside of the fabric facing out. Then I sewed a 1/4″ seam around the edges, leaving one of the small ends open.
I turned the bags right-side-out and used a funnel to put rice inside, then folded the open end in 1/4″ inch and secured it with a pin.
Then I just sewed along the edge of the open ends to close the bags.
Now you’re ready to play!
For a “no sew” version— glue on the ribbon instead of sewing, glue the seam around the edge, then instead of rice bags you can paint some wooden shapes (available at craft stores).
