Christmas Place-mats

I decided to make some cute new Christmas place-mats this year for my table, and for gifts!  If you are a sewer this is an easy project that can be modified to fit your style.  If you aren’t a sewer I will share some ideas at the end for Christmas place-mats anyone can make!

I found these cute fabrics at Joann and cut them into strips.  They are all 13″ long and here are the widths I used: brown 4″, red 3″, green 5″, red 2″, blue 3″, brown 3″.  To make 4 place mats you will need to cut 4 of each of those.  I also cut 4 rectangles for the backs of the place-mats, these were 13″x18″.

Then I started sewing the strips together, using a 1/4″ seam. I sewed them with the fronts of the fabric facing each other so that when it unfolded the seam faced the back and the fronts of the fabric faced forward.

Once I got all 4 of them sewed together, I turned them over and ironed the seams flat.

Next I laid the front of the place-mats face-up and laid the backs of the place-mat face-down on top of them and pinned them in place.

I sewed a 1/4″ seam around the edge, leaving a 2″ gap on one of the ends.

I turned them right-side-out through the 2″ gap, then ironed them so they would lay flat.

To finish the place-mats, I sewed a 1/8″ border around the edge (this helps it to stay flat and closes the 2″ gap”.

Now they are ready to make someone’s table merry and bright!!

If you are not the sewing type, you could buy some cheap, plain place-mats and decorate them with appliques, ribbons and trim glued on, stencils… whatever you can think of!
